I love flowers, they are such a joy to look at. Their beauty and variety amazes me. I started making ceramic flowers with this in mind. I wanted to try and capture some of the joy I felt when looking at real flowers. The bonus of ceramic flowers is that if they are looked after, they last a long time. I mainly use porcelain when making them. Porcelain has such a beautiful quality that really works with flowers. I like to display them alongside real dried flowers. I think this adds a more natural look and comes together as a beautiful bouquet. Where possible, I like to follow the seasons with my makes and I’m currently underway making lots of snowdrops and daffodils.
In the spotlight… Porcelain Forever Flowers
Pinching is one of the simplest hand-building techniques. This method has been used since ancient times to make pottery.
By pinching a ball of clay into a shape using thumb and fingers, functional and ornamental pottery can be made.
To make larger items, pinching can be used alongside other methods, such as coiling.
One of the first things most people make with clay is a small pinch pot. Its the first thing I made years ago and its only recently that I have returned to this method. I find the process of pinching very therapeutic and I love the organic shapes and textures it creates.
